Key technical criteria for coated, high‑stress surfaces include hardness, adhesion to various substrate materials, toughness, friction and wear performance, resistance at elevated processing and service temperatures, and chemical resistance to aggressive media.
Tool coatings are a classic application of hard coatings, aiming to increase tool life, save resources and reduce costs. Key benefits are substantial productivity gains via higher cutting speeds, increased feed rates or shorter cycle times. Typical coatings are TiN and AlTiN, deposited by arc or HiPIMS sputtering.
Another field of application is friction reduction. Bearings, gearboxes, and movable joints face considerable mechanical stress and a trend toward miniaturization. Limited cooling in aerospace, restricted energy reserves in e‑mobility and robotics, and the need for long service life with low wear call for hard, low‑friction, high‑thermal‑conductivity tribological coatings.
