Vacuum Coating System for Large Astronomical Mirrors

Are you looking for a coat­ing so­lu­tion for large as­tro­nom­i­cal mir­rors that com­bines high re­flec­tiv­i­ty, nanom­e­ter-level u­ni­for­mi­ty, re­pro­du­ci­ble pro­cess con­trol, and safe han­dling? SKYVA Vac­uum coat­ing sys­tems are de­vel­oped spe­ci­fi­cal­ly for large, cu­rved mir­ror sub­strates and can de­pos­it ho­mo­ge­neous, high­ly re­flec­tive met­al lay­ers on mir­rors with di­am­e­ters of up to 8.4 me­ters. Dif­fer­ent cham­ber sizes and cus­tom­ized equip­ment con­fig­u­ra­tions en­able scal­ing from small and med­ium aper­tures to the larg­est as­tro­nom­i­cal mir­rors.

Coat­ing as­tro­nom­i­cal mir­rors pre­sents a wide range of tech­ni­cal and op­er­a­tion­al chal­lenges. While the sheer size of the mir­rors is a ma­jor fac­tor, it is by no means the on­ly one. In tele­scope con­struc­tion, in­di­vid­ual mir­rors can ex­ceed eight me­ters in di­am­e­ter and are pol­ished to a sur­face ac­cu­ra­cy of ap­prox­i­mate­ly 20 nanom­e­ters. The coat­ing pro­cess must pre­serve this ac­cu­ra­cy, avoid dis­tor­ting the mir­ror's i­deal par­ab­olic or hy­per­bol­ic shape, and de­liv­er ex­cel­lent lay­er u­ni­for­mi­ty a­cross the en­tire cu­rved sur­face.

In prac­tice, this re­quires nanom­e­ter-level pro­cess con­trol, low par­ti­cle den­si­ty, and pre­cise mon­i­tor­ing of the coat­ing param­e­ters. The re­quire­ments are even more de­mand­ing at re­mote, high-al­ti­tude ob­ser­va­to­ries, where equip­ment must with­stand ex­treme cli­mat­ic and seis­mic con­di­tions. At the same time, the com­po­nents used must be de­signed for an in­ten­ded ser­vice life of more than 30 years.

SKYVA sys­tems sup­port pro­tec­ted and en­hanced alu­min­um and sil­ver coat­ings, as well as ap­pli­ca­tion-spe­cif­ic mul­ti­lay­er sys­tems with tai­lored re­flec­tiv­i­ty cur­ves. Cus­tom­ized cham­ber di­men­sions, mir­ror fix­tures, and han­dling sys­tems en­able the equip­ment to be adap­ted to dif­fer­ent mir­ror ge­o­met­ries and pro­ject re­quire­ments.

Au­to­mat­ed pro­cess se­quences, ad­vanced con­trol sys­tems, recipe man­age­ment, fault di­ag­no­sis, and in­tu­i­tive hu­man-ma­chine in­ter­fac­es en­able re­pro­du­ci­ble coat­ing re­sults. Op­tional re­mote mon­i­tor­ing and con­trol sup­port ef­fi­cient op­er­a­tion and main­ten­ance, par­tic­u­lar­ly at re­mote ob­ser­va­to­ry sites. Pe­riph­er­al equip­ment, in­clud­ing mir­ror-clean­ing and mea­sure­ment sys­tems, is also avail­able.
