Recent trends such as electromobility, power generation from renewable energy sources and the Internet of Things (IoT) have made energy storage enormously important. Batteries are the preferred technology for many applications thanks to their diverse properties.
These properties, such as energy content, energy density, power density or lifetime, can be specifically tailored to the application, depending on the electrochemical system. Systems range from thin-film batteries for IoT applications to lithium-ion battery cells to redox flow batteries for stationary energy storage.
In the development of new battery technologies, the stabilization of interfaces between the individual components of a battery cell is often the greatest challenge. This also applies to the optimization of existing technologies. In addition, there is a high demand for saving inactive materials in the battery cell. For this reason, the demand for thin, functional layers has increased greatly in recent years. And these are produced with vacuum coating, which is already state of the art for the production of thin-film batteries.
As a manufacturer of vacuum coating systems from R&D to high-volume production, VON ARDENNE has the necessary technological know-how to develop the coating processes without losing sight of the scaling aspects. To this end, we work closely with our customers and also develop our own solutions together with research institutes. Our main focus is on lithium-ion batteries.
