Press Release

On 23 June 2016, VON ARDENNE joined the non-profit organization PVthin. It is a global initiative
by leading companies and research institutions representing the whole value chain of thin-film
photovoltaics. The agreement to join the PVthin was signed during the Intersolar in Munich by
the President of PVthin, Andreas Wade, and the CEO of VON ARDENNE, Thomas Krischke.

One of the key objectives of PVthin is to strengthen global energy security and to support the
transition to a low-carbon economy by promoting thin-film solar technologies.

Furthermore, PVthin has the aim to cooperate with associations and industries that support
responsible product management at end-of-life and internalized holistic environmental
footprinting based on Life Cycle Assessment.

Another priority will be to encourage resource-efficient production, sustainable raw material
use and investments in programs and technologies that enable responsible recycling and

Apart from that, PVthin offers a platform for research on both mature and emerging thin-film
PV technologies. Beyond that, the association seeks to inform about on the potential of thinfilm
photovoltaics and their environmental, social, economic and technological benefits.

“VON ARDENNE fully supports the objectives of PVthin”, said Thomas Böcke, Director Sales,
Solar of VON ARDENNE. “We are pleased to be a member of this growing association and to
further promote resource-efficient energy generation and the efficiency enhancement of the
thin-film technology”, Böcke continued.

VON ARDENNE develops and manufactures equipment for industrial coatings on materials such as glass, wafers, metal strip and polymer films. These coatings give the surfaces new functional properties and can be between one nanometer and a few micrometers thin, depending on the application. The coated materials are the basis for products such as architectural glass, solar modules or touch screens.

VON ARDENNE is a leading provider of architectural glass coating equipment and coating systems for thin-film photovoltaics. The family-owned company with subsidiaries in China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and the USA relies on customer proximity in order to offer ideal on-site service. VON ARDENNE equipment is in operation in more than 50 countries around the world.

The International Thin-Film Solar Industry Association (PVthin) is an international, not-forprofit
coalition representing global leaders in the thin-film solar industry that manufacture
and market products based on chalcogenide, chalcopyrite and kesterite compounds such
as cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper indium [gallium] selenide (CIS/CIGS), and perovskites.
Thin-film photovoltaics (PV) emerged onto the market as an affordable alternative to the slow
production and high cost of traditional purified crystalline silicon wafers. PVThin is registered as
a non-profit international association under Belgian law.
